How To Make Dutch Oven Chicken Cacciatore
Step 1. Label outside of bag with name, cooking and serving instructions. These instructions are for making this Italian chicken cacciatore in Dutch ovens as prep-ahead freezer meals that you prepare at home then just defrost and cook at the campsite.
You can avoid the freezing part of these instructions if you want to prep at the campsite and cook this camp dinner immediately.
Step 2. Prep ingredients and freeze. Clean and chop the bell peppers, garlic, chicken, onion, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, basil and pepper flakes according to the ingredient list.
Place everything together into a gallon freezer bag. Mix, seal and lay flat in freezer.
I like using my Camping Flexible Cutting Mats for my meal prep at home and at the campsite. They are easy to use, clean and store.
Step 3. Defrost freezer bag meal prior to cooking. At the campsite, place the freezer bag in a refrigerator or cooler to defrost prior to cooking.
This is just one of our simple make ahead camping meals you are going to love!
Step 4. Start campfire or charcoal for cooking. Use your favorite camping fire starters to get your campfire ready for cooking.
Make sure you have a nice bed of coals that will last throughout the cooking time … it will be about 40 minutes from the time the sauce begins to simmer.
We love cooking our campfire recipes directly over the fire but you can also cook this camp meal using charcoal briquettes, a camp stove or RV stove. You will be cooking over a medium heat … not a specific temperature.
Step 5. Dump and simmer. Place contents of freezer bag in 10-inch camp Dutch oven over medium campfire heat. You bring the mixture up to a simmer then cover with the lid.
Occasionally stir the pot and check for doneness. It will take between 30-45 minutes to fully cook this recipe.
Camp Cooking Tip: How thick do you like your sauce? If it is too thin, just remove the lid and continue cooking till it reaches the consistency you like.
We have so many other Dutch oven camping recipes because it is our favorite method of cooking at the campsite!
Step 6. Make the pasta. At the same time the camp oven chicken cacciatore is cooking, you’ll want to cook the pasta according to the package directions.
Camp Cooking Tip: Don’t start the pasta too early, it is easier to serve it when it is finished cooking rather than hold it while you wait for the chicken to cook through.
Step 7. Serve it. For serving, top with Parmesan and additional salt and pepper to taste.
