What To Do With Empty 1lb Propane Bottles
Those convenient little propane canisters are some of the most popular ways to transport and use camping propane in the wilderness. But, once they are used, do you know what to do with empty 1lb propane bottles?
- You may want to …
- Refill and reuse it …
- On the other hand, it may be at the end of its useful life and you decide to …
- Get rid of it.
- If that’s the case, you need to know how to dispose of 1lb propane cylinders.

Psst we’re compensated…see our disclosures.
What To Do With Small Propane Canisters
When you are trying to determine what to do with empty 1lb propane tanks, you first need to consider if you want to refill it or dispose of it.
You can use a device known as a propane refill adapter to refill and re-use the tank if it is in good condition. (Note: Laws vary by location, see our post for more details.)
If the tank has seen better days, it is time to take it out of service. Here’s what you need to look for regarding the condition of the small tank.
How To Check Propane Tanks
- Check the cylinder. It should be free from rust, dents or anything else that would diminish the integrity of the 16 oz cylinder.
- Check the seals. If the seals are damaged or missing, the 1 lb tank should not be used. The most common cause of damaged seals is a result of over-tightening when connecting the tank to an appliance. Camping Tip: DON’T use tools to tighten your propane tanks to your gear. DO limit yourself to hand-tightened connections between the cylinder and the gear it is fueling.
- Check the valves. A good cylinder will have a valve that is free from dirt and rust.
- Check for leaks. Camping propane tanks that leak should be discarded immediately. There are 3 simple ways to determine if the tank is leaking.
- Bubbles from soapy water. The easiest way to check for leaks is to connect the tank to a piece of camping gear then place soapy water at the connection point. If you see bubbles … the tank is leaking.
- Hissing sound. When you have the propane canister connected to a propane powered accessory, it should not make any sound. If you hear a hissing sound … the tank is leaking.
- Rotten egg smell. You don’t need to have a super-keen sense of smell to notice the smell of rotten eggs! LOL If you detect a rotten egg stench … the tank is leaking.

‘An un-opened container of Coleman Fuel stored in a dry area with no rapid extreme changes in temperature will remain viable for five to seven years. An opened container stored in the same area will remain viable for up to two years though will be at its best if used within a year. Coleman Propane Cylinders can be stored indefinitely in a dry area. The propane fuel inside the cylinder will not break down.’

Municipal Household Hazardous Waste Events
Most local public works departments don’t want residents to throw old tanks, electronics or batteries into garbage cans or dumpsters for fear of explosions. As an alternative they offer information in recycling guides for proper Coleman propane tank disposal. You can often find local household hazardous waste facilities along with a collection schedule for the events. Recycling carts and recycle bins are also found at special events that promote green living.
Most municipalities have Household Hazardous Waste Events and many accept camp stove propane tanks.
- Typically, you must be a residential solid waste customer and usually have to show a current city services bill along with a matching photo ID.
- These events have specific dates, times and locations so check with your municipality for details.
Bernzomatic’s CylinderSafe Program
As a responsible company, Bernzomatic has created a program called CylinderSafe. It helps people determine how to dispose of empty propane bottles (no matter which company manufactured the bottles) by easily connecting them with their local solid waste authority.
Because procedures for disposing of empty non-refillable cylinders vary by location … you just need to enter your ZIP code to find the contact information for the local solid waste authority in your area.
Disposal Of Full Butane Gas Canisters
If you are using a high-performance propane/isobutane four-season blend fuel canister that comes in a steel can, many recycling centers will take them if they are empty and a hole has been punched in the canister.

Jetboil Crunchit Fuel Canister Recycling Tool
The Jetboil Crunchit Fuel Canister Recycling Tool makes butane can puncture tasks simple.
- The tool easily threads onto the canister to release residual trapped gas then you press down on the tool to punch a hole in the vessel.
- It sort of works like a can/bottle opener.
- In most areas of the country, this is sufficient for butane gas can disposal in a recycling collection … check with your local authorities for details.
What Is HHW?
In some states, like California, 1 pound propane gas cylinders are considered HHW (Household Hazardous Waste). In those areas you need to take your canisters to a hazardous waste collection site for proper handling and disposal.
Can Your Throw 1 Pound Propane Cylinders In The Trash?
If you have exhausted all options to find hazardous waste haulers, a hazardous waste disposal site, and local public collection events, many local propane suppliers and retailers suggest you empty, then, safely properly puncture the cylinder so it is not pressurized before throwing it in the trash. NOTE: This is NOT legal in many areas so you must know the local laws and proceed with guidance from local officials.
Coleman’s Green Key Tool
In 2009, The Coleman Company included a Green Key tool with the purchase of single-use cylinders. The program was developed to encourage recycling as the preferred choice in disposal options.
Unfortunately, the program was not accepted by many metal recyclers and scrap metal dealers across the United States so it has been discontinued. If you happen to be one of those lucky campers who got the tool when it was available, you can still use it.
While in an outdoor area and after insertion into an empty propane cylinder, the remaining fumes of any residual gas are released, the cylinder becomes depressurized.
Here are full instructions on how to use the Coleman manufacturing company’s Green Key Tool.
The company is still working in the U.S. and Canada to make steel can recycling as common as aluminum beverage can recycling.
