Psst we’re compensated…see our disclosures.
Prepare In Advance
These prosciutto sandwiches are so simple, you’ll want to use the best high quality ingredients for the Italian flavors in this easy recipe to taste top notch!
I don’t always make a homemade salad dressing but when I do, it is for a reason, the flavor is worth the small amount of effort. This basic balsamic glaze is so simple, I often make it right at the campsite.
But, you can also just make it at home. Put all ingredients in sealable jar and shake vigorously until combined. Refrigerate until ready to use.
You’ve gotta love that you can make this vinaigrette ahead and transport in food storage containers with tight-fitting lids … if refrigerated, this one keeps for about two weeks.
Recipe Prep
The only prepping you need to do here is chop a clove of garlic (for the dressing) and slice some fresh tomatoes (for the sandwich). If you purchase unsliced fresh mozzarella cheese, you’ll need to slice that too.
Recipe Steps
Step 1. Prepare the vinaigrette. Combine all ingredients in a sealable jar and shake to combine. Use immediately or refrigerate.
Step 2. Place the sandwich ingredients on your flat surface and prep them for the sandwich. You’ll be slicing the ciabatta rolls, fresh mozzarella and tomatoes.
Step 3. Spread vinaigrette on the cut sides of the bread.
Step 4. Layer sandwich ingredients on bottom bread slice then top with remaining piece of bread.
Scaling Servings
Individual sandwiches make great camping meals for two if you don’t want leftovers from family-sized meals.
Individual wraps and sandwiches are easy camping meals for large groups. Just set out an ingredient bar and let each camper build their own.
Just because these delicious sandwiches don’t require cooking, it does not mean that you can forget about handling food properly. Check out our Camping Food Safety Tips Including How To Pack A Cooler For Camping post for tips that will keep your camping family happy and healthy during your trips!
Substitutions
Ciabatta is our bread of choice. You can use any type of rustic Italian white bread or any crusty bread. A French baguette or focaccia are nice too.
There are different types of prosciutto. Prosciutto Di Parma has a reputation for being the highest quality tender meat with a slightly sweet flavor. I like using parma ham for this recipe and on charcuterie boards. It’s available in most grocery stores; we also get it when we pick up the items on our Costco camping food list. If you can’t find it, you can substitute very thinly sliced dry cured ham.
To make this recipe even easier, you can just use a prepared balsamic dressing.
What To Serve With This Recipe
I like to serve this prosciutto mozzarella sandwich with fresh arugula or a spring mix lettuce salad with a few thin slices of red onions. A nice, fresh peppery arugula can stand on its own with just a drizzle of olive oil rather than a heavy salad dressing.
This is a big sandwich, so, if you’re looking for easy camping lunches that will satisfy you for most of the day, this is a great option.
